   Elephant Odyssey – San Diego Zoo      
     
    Mother Columbian Mammoth and Infant
The female is 10 feet at the shoulder. Mammoths were the predecessors to the Asian elephant, and lived about 12,000 years ago.
    Smilodon
The Smilodon (often referred to as the saber-toothed tiger) is about the size of an African lion. He has an extra large chest and shoulder, and 7-inch saber.
    Male Colombian Mammoth
The male mammoth measures approximately 12 feet at the shoulder with tusks 13 feet in length. Weighing in at 10,000 lbs., he ruled the southwest U.S. about 12,000 years ago.
 
   

American Lion
The American Lion is a large cat. American Lions roamed parts of the western U.S. and California, and weighed about 500 lbs. and measured up to 11 feet in length.


 
    Teratorn
This huge bird is kin to the condor and has a wingspan of 12 feet.
 
    Daggett’s Eagle
This bird stands about 4 feet tall.
 
    Jefferson Ground Sloth
This longhaired comic looking animal stands about 12-feet tall. Under all that hair, the skin of the sloth was fully armored. No wonder he moved so slowly!!
